No. ESL Classes are taught by volunteers who have a range of experience in education and who want to help others learn English. Although we can’t give out language certificates, we are confident that students will improve in their English speaking abilities by attending our ESL Classes and Conversations.
We are using the Cambridge Ventures program. The lessons are structured to teach the high frequency words that new English speakers need to know in order to manage life in Canada. Units include: Personal Information, At School, Friends and Family, Health, Around Town, Time, Shopping, Work, Daily Living and Free Time. This program has 6 levels. We plan to offer a beginner class and an intermediate level class this fall.
We are using the Bridges program prepared by Love New Canadians. We will use both cultural topics and a simplified version of the book of Luke, from the Bible, to introduce new vocabulary and guide our conversations. Students will have many opportunities to practice using the new vocabulary in small groups.
Yes. We want to help as many people as possible. Pay as much as you are able, and we will pay the rest for you.
Maybe. It will be much easier for you to concentrate on learning if you are able to come without your children. We encourage you to do your best to find child care. Nursing babies are always welcome, but older children can be a distraction. We don’t offer child care, but if you have no other option, you are welcome to try bringing young children with you. We have toys that they can play with in the classroom. You will be responsible to care for them. If they are able to play quietly without distracting the rest of the class, they will be welcome to stay. If it is too distracting for the rest of the class, they will not be permitted to come. If you are a mother with young children, you are most welcome to attend the Moms and Tots playgroup on Wednesday mornings with your children. This is another place where you can practice English while making friends with other moms.
